A method for forming a magnetic nanoparticle-coated laminate material wherein the method comprises forming a magnetic nanoparticle-containing coating 32 on substrates (material film portions 30) and stacking and compressing the coated substrates to form the laminate. The substrates may be provided as a plurality of tiles 31a, 31b etc. The coating may be applied on both sides (30a /30b or 31a/31b) of the tiles. The magnetic nanoparticle has a core and an outer shell. The nanoparticle shell and core are made of different materials selected from one or more of : iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni); and/or alloys comprising two or more of iron, cobalt and/or nickel; and/or magnetic rare earth metals; and/or diamagnetic transition metals. The source of the nanoparticle containing coating 34 may also contain a source of matrix material. The nanoparticles are then deposited onto the matrix and embedded into the matrix as it forms. The laminate may form a component of an electromagnetic apparatus such as a motor or a stator. A further arrangement concerns forming a magnetic nanoparticle-coated coiled material.
