A transparent protective material comprising a rare-earth garnet ceramic is provided. The rare-earth garnet ceramic has general formula (R1 R2)aAl50i2, wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of Y, Yb, and combinations thereof, and R2 is selected from the group consisting of Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Tm, Lu, and combinations thereof, R1 being present in an amount that is more than 90 atomic % of total amount of R1 and R2, and R2 being present in an amount that is 10 atomic % or less of total amount of R1 and R2, and a is in the range from about 3 to about 3.015. In a preferred embodiment, yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) is employed as the transparent protective material. Additionally, a ballistic resistant article made of said transparent protective material is also provided.
