An article (100, 200) for high temperature service is presented. The article (100, 200) includes a substrate (110, 210) and a plurality of coatings (120, 220) disposed on the substrate (110, 210). At least one coating (122, 222) in the plurality of coatings (120, 220) includes an oxide of nominal composition AxB1-yDyOz, wherein A includes a rare-earth element, B includes tantalum or niobium, D includes zirconium or hafnium, 2 ≤ x ≤3, 0< y <1, and 6 ≤ z ≤7.
