PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide : a zirconia electrolyte which is high in strength and suitable for a solid electrolyte layer of a solid oxide fuel cell, or the like; and a method for manufacturing the zirconia electrolyte with a high strength. SOLUTION : A zirconia electrolyte according to the present invention comprises a zirconia stabilized by oxide of one or more rare earth elements selected from a group consisting of scandium, yttrium, cerium, gadolinium, ytterbium. In a fracture surface thereof, the standard deviation about the number of pores in 10 or more regions of 50 μm2 which do not overlie each other is 2.5 or more.
