PURPOSE : A method for monitoring a cable error in a broadband lambda sensor and a control unit are provided to detect the cable error in terminals of the broadband lambda sensor. CONSTITUTION : A control unit(10) operates a broadband lambda sensor(60) in an exhaust gas channel of an internal combustion engine. The control unit detects information for an operating state of the broadband lambda sensor. The broadband lambda sensor includes a Nernst cell(61) and a pump cell(62). The broadband lambda sensor includes a reference electrode terminal(RE), an internal pump electrode terminal(IPE), and an external pump electrode terminal(APE). The control unit is connected to not only the terminals of the broadband lambda sensor but also a grounding resistor(64) and a correcting resistor(65).
