A bi-directionally pumped polarization maintaining (PM) fibre amplifier 100, comprising : a PM fibre-optic amplifier path with an input coupled to a first wavelength-division multiplexer (WDM) 103 and an output coupled to a second WDM 104, and a doped fibre 105 spliced between the WDMs; and, a pump source 108 emitting light with a polarization along a first axis coupled to the first WDM through a polarization beam combiner/splitter (PBCS) 107 and a polarization rotator 110 for downstream pumping of the doped fibre with light polarized orthogonally to the first polarization. Light with the first polarization is also upstream pumped along the doped fibre, which may be via : a second pump source 109, emitting identical light to the first pump source; an optical power splitter coupled to said first pump source; or, a fibre-coupled rotator mirror for reusing residual light, all of which are coupled to the second WDM and preferably a second PBCS 106. The doped fibre may be rare earth doped. The polarization rotator may comprise a 90 degree splice connection. The doped fibre may be a double-clad fibre with doped core and inner cladding. The input and output may comprise fibre-optic isolators 101, 102.
