PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a hydrogen-containing rare earth fluoride with a low oxygen content and a low water content as a rare earth fluoride material suitable for an infrared ray coating material, a luminescence material, a crystal material and the like and to provide a production method that facilitates the mass production.
SOLUTION : The hydrogen-containing rare earth fluoride has O content of 50 ppm or less in the hydrogen-containing rare earth fluoride, respective contents of C, N and S elements of 10 ppm or less, H2O content of 20 ppm or less and H content of 5 to 100 ppm. The method for producing a hydrogen-containing rare earth fluoride produces a high-purity rare earth fluoride material including a trace amount of hydride by subjecting a rare earth metal to hydrotreatment with a hydrogen gas to produce a rare earth hydride and reacting the rare earth hydride with hydrogen fluoride.
