PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a purification method with reduced cost capable of decreasing in the period of time for purification by improving the purity of a rare earth metal and increasing the moving speed of a fused region.
SOLUTION : The purification method of the rare earth metal includes : a step in which a rare earth metal sample rod arranged vertically is locally heated in a vacuum or protective atmosphere until the top end of the rare earth metal sample rod is melted to form a fused region; a step in which a position of the fused region is lowered until the fused region reaches a predetermined position and then heating is stopped so as to obtain a mixed solidified metal rod having at least 1 cm of length from the predetermined position to the bottom end of the rare earth metal sample rod; and a step in which a purified rare earth metal is obtained by cutting the metal to remove a top end portion and bottom end portion after the mixed solidified metal rod is cooled.
EFFECT : By arranging the rare earth metal rod vertically, the moving speed of the fused region and metal impurities therein is increased in the direction from top to bottom, so that the metal impurities can be separated and removed before the fused region solidifies.
