PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare earth metal degassing method having a small manhour requirement, high yield, and low energy consumption. SOLUTION : A rare earth metal degassing method includes : a step S1 of melting a rare earth metal to be purified under vacuum environment of 0.01 to 0.05 MPa to form a molten metal liquid; a step S2 of mixing a rare earth hydride of 0.5 to 10% by weight relative to a weight of the rare earth metal to be purified and the molten metal liquid, maintaining the temperature for 5 to 30 minutes, to obtain a degassed molten metal and a gaseous substance; and a step 3 of separating the gaseous substance and the degassed molten metal and cooling the degassed molten metal in inert gas to obtain a degassed rare earth metal. By bonding H atoms showing very strong reducing property by detaching in the neighborhood of the melting point of the rare earth hydride with gaseous element in the molten metal liquid, the gaseous element is removed in the form a gaseous compound.
