Provided is a method for producing low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene, in which perfluorocarboxylic acids having 8-14 carbon atoms, and salts thereof are not easily produced. This method for producing low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene is characterized by comprising : step (1) of introducing, into a sealed container, at least one additive selected from the group consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, hydrocarbon, chlorinated hydrocarbon, alcohol, and carboxylic acid (excluding perfluorocarboxylic acid having 8-14 carbon atoms), and at least one selected from the group consisting of an inert gas (other than said additive) and an oxygen adsorbent; and step (2) of irradiating the polytetrafluoroethylene with radiation to obtain low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene having a complex viscosity at 380°C of 1×102-7×105 Pa·s.
