PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a permanent magnet formed from an MnAl-based alloy and having high magnetic characteristics (especially high saturation magnetization).SOLUTION : A permanent magnet is formed from an MnAl-based alloy containing, when the whole is defined as 100 atom% (simply described "%" thereafter) : a total of (or any one of) Fe and Ni in 0.2 to 4%; Al in 40 to 50%; and Mn in the remaining. The permanent magnet presents saturation magnetization higher than that of a conventional MnAl magnet by distorting a crystal lattice anisotropically while maintaining a crystal structure of MnAl that presents magnetic characteristics, as it is by substituting Mn in the MnAl alloy with a little Fe or Ni. With the permanent magnet of the present invention, utilization promotion of an MnAl-based magnet can be attained while reducing the risk of resources in place of a rare earth magnet or a ferrite magnet.SELECTED DRAWING : None
