PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an earthwork material that uses a residue generated after treating rare earth-containing mud with an acid and can be utilized in applications such as light-weight aggregate and the like because of its lightweightness. SOLUTION : The granular earthwork material is produced by firing a dewatered cake or a slurry comprising a residue generated after treating rare earth-containing mud with an acid. The apparent density of the granular earthwork material is preferably 0.7 to 1.6 g/cm3. A method for producing a granular earthwork material includes a firing step of firing a dewatered cake or a slurry comprising a residue generated after treating rare earth-containing mud with an acid to produce a fired product and a granulation step of crushing, cutting or classifying the resultant fired product to produce a granular earthwork material.
