PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnesium alloy excellent in heat resistance which hardly generates cracks and a cast member. SOLUTION : There is provided a magnesium alloy having a structure containing, by mass%, Al of 1.0% to 3.0%, rare earth element of 1.5% to 3.0%, Ca of 0.5% to 1.5%, Mn of 0.1% to 0.5% and the balance Mg with inevitable impurities and having a compound containing Al and at least one of a rare earth element and Ca dispersed in a grain boundary and having an area ratio of a compound containing Mg and Al in a cross section of 5% or less.
