PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a modified conjugated diene polymer using a modifier of an inexpensive purine derivative and a catalyst which is relatively easily handled and to provide a rubber composition comprising the modifier and catalyst which is excellent in wear resistance and low fuel consumption property. SOLUTION : There is provided a modified conjugated diene polymer which is obtained by a step of obtaining a conjugated diene polymer by polymerizing a conjugated diene compound using a catalyst obtained from (A) a rare earth metal compound, (B) an organometallic compound of an element selected from the groups 2, 12 and 13 of the periodic table, (C) an ionic compound comprising a non-coordinating anion and a cation and a step of modifying the conjugated diene polymer with (D) a purine derivative.
