PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a permanent magnet which enables enhancement of magnetic characteristics of a Sm-Co based sintered magnet such as magnetization and a coercive force, and enables enhancement of mechanical characteristics such as strength.
SOLUTION : A permanent magnet comprises a sintered compact 6B having a composition represented by the following composition formula : RpFeqMrCusCo100-p-q-r-s (where R represents one or more elements selected from rare earth elements; M represents one or more elements selected from Zr, Ti and Hf; 10≤p≤13.3, 25≤q≤40, 0.87≤r≤5.4, and 3.5≤s≤13.5 (atom%)). The sintered compact 6B constituting the permanent magnet has a metallographic structure including main phases 2 including a Th2Zn17 type crystal phase, and R-M rich phases 3 including an element R of no less than 1.2 times an R concentration in the main phase, and an element M of no less than 1.2 times an M concentration in the main phase. The average crystal grain diameter of crystal grains constituting the sintered compact 6B falls in a range of 35-200 μm.
