PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a permanent magnet which is a Sm-(Co, Fe) based magnet having a composition with a high Fe concentration, and which can exhibit a large coercive force with good reproducibility.
SOLUTION : A permanent magnet according to an embodiment comprises a composition represented by the following formula : RpFeqMrCusCo100-p-q-r-s (where R represents a rare earth element, M represents at least one element selected from a group consisting of Zr, Ti and Hf, 8.0≤p≤13.5, 25≤q≤40, 0.88≤r≤7.2 and 3.5≤s≤13.5 (atom%)). The permanent magnet has a metallographic structure including cell phases having Th2Zn17 type crystal phases, cell-wall phases, and platelet phases located along c-planes of Th2Zn17 type crystal phases. The permanent magnet is 650 kA/m or more in coercive force, and 195 kJ/m3 or more in the maximum magnetic energy product ((BH)max).
