PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an alloy for an R-T-B based rare earth sintered magnet, by which an R-T-B magnet having a high coercive force and a high orientation rate can be manufactured.
SOLUTION : An alloy for an R-T-B based rare earth sintered magnet according to the present invention comprises : R which is a rare earth element; T which is a transition metal including Fe as a primary component; a metal element M which includes at least one metal selected from Al, Ga and Cu; B; and inevitable impurities. In the alloy, R is 13-16 atom%, B is 4.5-6.2 atom%, M is 0.1-2.4 atom%, and T accounts for the rest. The proportion of Dy in all of the rare earth elements is 0-65 atom%. The alloy satisfies the following formula (1) : 0.30≤B/TRE≤0.37 (1). The alloy includes main phases including R2Fe14B, and alloy grain boundary phases including more R than that in the main phase. The distance between the alloy grain boundary phases is 3-11 μm.
