PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an optical fiber capable of suppressing an inter-mode gain difference, and an optical fiber employing the same. SOLUTION : The present invention relates to an optical fiber 10 for amplification in which lights of a plurality of modes are propagated through a core 11 to which a rare earth element is added in a predetermined wavelength band. When a cutoff wavelength of a light of a highest-order mode to be propagated is defined as λc, a shortest wavelength of the wavelength band is defined as λmin and a cutoff wavelength of the light of the highest-order mode in the case where the cutoff wavelength of a light of a next mode light to the light of the highest-order mode becomes λmin is defined as λmax, an inequality (1) : λc>0.5λmin+0.5λmax is satisfied.
