A method of recovering precious metals and rare-earth elements from waste materials is disclosed, said method comprising the use of a fungus isolated from mine mud and belonging to a genus selected from Penicillium, Cladosporium and combinations thereof. This fungus has been found to bioaccumulate said elements, thus allowing a selective and quantitative separation of the same.
