This laser medium is a single crystal or ceramic which is formed of M1RM2O4 (wherein M1 represents one or more alkaline earth metal elements selected from the group consisting of Ca, Sr and Ba; R represents one or more rare earth elements selected from the group consisting of Y, La, Gd and Lu; and M2 represents one or two group 13 elements selected from the group consisting of Al and Ga) that is doped with Cr3+ and Nd3+. This laser medium is capable of performing laser oscillation by means of sunlight excitation.
