A rare-earth based hydrogen storage alloy has a composition represented by the general formula (1) : RExYyNiz-a-b-cMnaAlbMcZrATiB (1), wherein RE is one or more elements selected from La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Gd, and M is one or more elements selected from Cu, Fe, Co, Sn, V and W. The alloy has good pressure-composition-isothermal characteristics, higher hydrogen storage capacity and electrochemical capacity, and does not contain magnesium. The preparing process of the alloy is simple and safe.
