PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a nickel-hydrogen secondary battery which enables the achievement of the balance between a high-rate discharge characteristic and a life property.
SOLUTION : A nickel-hydrogen secondary battery 2 has an electrode group 22 arranged by superposing a positive electrode 24 and a negative electrode 26 with a separator 28 interposed therebetween, and an alkaline electrolyte, which are enclosed together in the battery. In the battery 2, Li is included. The total amount of Li in the battery 2 is 15-50 mg/Ah in terms of LiOH, which is determined as a mass per ampere-hour of a capacity of the positive electrode. The negative electrode 26 includes particles of a rare earth-Mg-Ni based hydrogen-absorbable alloy which includes a rare earth element, Mg and Ni. Each hydrogen-absorbable alloy particle 44 has, on its surface, a rare earth hydroxide 50, which is a hydroxide of the rare earth element, and a specific surface area of 0.1-0.5 m2/g.
