The invention relates to a device for retaining rare cells contained in a liquid sample, said device comprising : a means for filtering a liquid sample, including a liquid inlet and a liquid outlet, as well as a plurality of filtration through-pores, each connecting the liquid inlet to the liquid outlet by means of an inner filtration pore surface, each of the filtration pores comprising a filtration pore inlet opening at the location of the liquid inlet and a filtration pore outlet opening at the location of the liquid outlet; and a liquid absorption means comprising a liquid access associated with the liquid outlet of the filtration means, the absorption means being capable of absorbing liquid through the filtration means. The liquid absorption means comprises a porous material capable of absorbing liquid by capillary action through the filtration means, said liquid absorption means being capable of absorbing more than one hundred microlitres of liquid.
