This nickel hydrogen secondary battery (2) is provided with an outer package can (10) and an electrode group (22) that is hermetically sealed within the outer package can (10) together with an alkaline electrolyte solution. The electrode group (22) is composed of a positive electrode (24) and a negative electrode (26), which are laminated with a separator (28) being interposed therebetween. The alkaline electrolyte solution contains NaOH as a main component of the solute. The negative electrode (26) contains a hydrogen storage alloy which has a composition represented by general formula Ln1-xMgxNiy-zMz (wherein Ln represents one or more elements selected from among rare earth elements and Zr; M represents Al; subscripts x, y and z respectively satisfy 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05, 3.3 ≤ y ≤ 3.6 and 0 ≤ z ≤ 0.50; and the ratio of La among the rare earth elements in Ln is 25% or less).
