PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a structure excellent in the lighting startability at the time of initial lighting, and prolonging the flicker life of a lamp by preventing early exhaustion of an emitter, even if an emitter other than thorium is added to the negative electrode, thereby maintaining the electron radiation function for a long time, in a discharge lamp where a negative electrode and a positive electrode are arranged to face each other in a luminous tube.
SOLUTION : A negative electrode 3 consists of a body 31 and a tip 32 bonded to the tip 32 thereof, where the body is composed of a high melting point metal material not containing thorium, and the tip is composed of a high melting point metal material containing an emitter (excepting thorium). In a sealed space 33 formed in the body and/or the tip, a sintered compact 34 containing an emitter (excepting thorium) with a concentration higher than that of the emitter contained in the tip is embedded, and the sintered compact is composed while containing a rare earth composite oxide.
