This negative-electrode active material for secondary batteries comprises a lithium silicate phase and a silicon phase dispersed in the lithium silicate phase, wherein the lithium silicate phase includes at least one element M selected from the group consisting of alkali metal elements (excluding lithium), group 2 elements, rare earth elements, zirconium (Zr), niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), vanadium (V), titanium (Ti), phosphorus (P), bismuth (Bi), zinc (Zn), tin (Sn), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), cobalt (Co), fluorine (F), tungsten (W), aluminum (Al), and boron (B), and has a spot image in an electron beam diffraction image from a transmission electron microscope.
