The objective of the present invention is to provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery which has high normal-temperature output retention rate after the cycles of the battery. A positive electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which is characterized in that a compound containing a rare earth element is adhered to the surface of a positive electrode active material that is composed of a lithium-containing transition metal oxide that contains at least one element selected from the group consisting of group 5 elements of the periodic table. It is particularly preferable to use tantalum as the group 5 element of the periodic table, since tantalum is highly effective for structure stabilization within particles.
