Provided is a method for preparing a cerium oxide from a rare earth compound, the method including the steps of : adding potassium permanganate to a rare earth compound containing cerium to obtain a cerium-containing composite; washing the cerium-containing composite; leaching the washed cerium-containing composite; after the leaching step, adding a pH adjusting agent to obtain cerium precipitate; and drying and calcining the washed cerium precipitate to obtain a cerium oxide.
