Walls forming exhaust gas channels (2, 6) in a diesel particulate filter (DPF) (1) are coated with a catalyst layer (7) for promoting the burning of particulates trapped thereon. The catalyst layer (7) contains alumna (14) and a composite oxide (13) containing Ce as a major component and rare earth metal other than Ce or alkali earth metal. Pt is loaded on the alumina (14) and the composite oxide (13).
