PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To convert carbon monoxide(CO) and unburned hydrocarbon(HO) into carbon dioxide(CO2) produced in burning a carbonaceous fuel to generate energy and prevent emission of sulfur dioxide(SO2), a cause of accelerating environmental warming.
SOLUTION : Lanthanide elements are contained in a large number of compounds in trace amounts and expressed of formula Ln3+. Since trivalent ions have ionic radii nearly equal to the ionic radius of Ca2+, sites of calcium ions in a crystal lattice are easily replaceable with trivalent ions, and lanthanide elements are emitted into the environment when many calcium ores are degraded by weathering, and these ions are deposited in the form of insoluble carbonates and phosphates without significant transfer in the environment. Carbonaceous fuels are burned to generate energy, and NOx can be decomposed into nitrogen.
