PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a novel hydrogen storage alloy which is a CaCu5 type hydrogen storage alloy containing Mm, and which allows the content percentage of Nd and Pr in Mm to be reduced and nonetheless maintains life property. SOLUTION : A hydrogen storage alloy having a CaCu5 type, i.e. AB5 type crystal structure as a parent phase is proposed in which misch metal (called as "Mm" ) 90 to 100 mass% of the total of which is occupied by La and Ce constitutes an A site of the AB5 type and in which one of Ni, Al, Mn, Co, Fe, Ti, V and Zr or a combination of two or more of them constitutes a B site of the AB5 type. A crystallite size of the hydrogen storage alloy obtained by an X ray diffraction measurement (Lorentzian method) is larger than 466 nm and strain (Lorentzian method) is 0.18 or less.
