A method for converting and decomposing bastnaesite rare earth ore by calcinating same with a calcium compound and a masking agent, the method comprising : pulverizing the bastnaesite rare earth ore and adding calcium compound powder and mixing the two uniformly; putting the mixture into a crucible and covering the exposed surface with the masking agent; calcinating to convert the rare earth fluoride in the ore into a rare earth compound easily soluble in hydrochloric acid; stirring and blending the calcinated ore in heated water, and adding the hydrochloric acid for leaching so as to obtain a rare earth chloride solution, the recovery rate of rare earth leaching being 97%. Said method does not need alkali conversion and water washing, and shortens the technological process; and fluorine in the ore reacts to generate calcium fluoride, having no pollution to air and water, and the calcium fluoride can be recycled. Said method saves energy and reduces consumption, with the conversion rate of the rare earth ore being equal to or greater than 98%, and the recovery rate of rare earth leaching being equal to or greater than 97%.
