[Problem] To provide an R-T-B-type permanent magnet that is lightweight despite having equivalent magnetic properties to conventional Nd-Fe-B-type permanent magnets, and that is favorable as the field magnet of a permanent magnet synchronous rotary machine. [Solution] In the case that the composition of a compound forming the primary phase is (R1-x(Y1-zCez)x)2T14B (where R is a rare earth element comprising at least one of La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu; Y is yttrium; Ce is cerium; T is at least one transition metal element requiring Fe or Fe and Co; B is boron; 0.0 < x ≤ 0.5; and 0.0 ≤ z ≤ 0.5), the ratio of the presence of Y4f, which is the Y occupying the 4f sites in a tetragonal R2T14B structure, and Y4g, which is the Y occupying the 4g sites, is such that 0.8 ≤ Y4f/(Y4f+Y4g) ≤ 1.0, and thereby a magnet that is lightweight despite having equivalent magnetic properties to conventional Nd-Fe-B-type permanent magnets is obtained.
