An inorganic oxide according to the present invention has a chemical composition represented by the general formula : M2LnX2(AlO4)3 (wherein M comprises Ca, Ln comprises Eu, and X comprises Zr and/or Hf). The crystal structure of the inorganic oxide is a garnet-type structure. Eu3+ in the inorganic oxide can release bright-line-shaped multiple fluorescent components, wherein the main bright line of the fluorescent components falls within the wavelength range of 600 nm or longer and shorter than 628 nm. The maximum height of a bright line included within the wavelength range of 700 nm or longer and shorter than 720 nm is less than 60% of the maximum height of the main bright line. A phosphor comprising the inorganic oxide has narrow band characteristics and can emit red light having good color purity.
