The invention relates to a method for the recovery of rare earth oxides and comprises the following steps : mixing a rare earth-containing phosphate with carbon and a slag-forming oxygen-containing compound of sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, lithium, aluminum, iron or boron, or a mixture thereof. The mixture of substances is then heat-treated at a temperature between 1100° C and 1800° C and a rare earth oxide is produced.
