PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a hydrogen storage alloy that provides a negative electrode material of a nickel hydride secondary battery excellent in high rate discharge property while maintaining high capacity, and to provide a nickel hydride secondary battery using the hydrogen storage alloy. SOLUTION : A nickel hydride secondary battery 2 is constituted in such a way that an electrode group 22 consisting of a positive electrode 24 and a negative electrode 26 which are laminated via separator 28 are housed in an outer package can 10 together with an alkaline electrolyte. The negative electrode 26 includes the hydrogen storage alloy which has : a composition represented by the general formula : Ln1-x-yCaxMgyNia-bAlb, where Ln is at least one element selected from among Zr and rare earth elements, subscripts x, y, a and b show 0.05≤x≤0.10, 0.11≤y≤0.2, 3.3≤a≤3.6 and 0.15≤b≤0.20; a main phase having an A2B7 type structure or an A5B19 type structure; and a sub phase having a structure other than a crystal structure of the main phase, the sub phase having a Ca percentage higher than that of the main phase.
