PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a nickel hydrogen secondary battery excellent in low-temperature discharge characteristics while maintaining cycle life characteristics. SOLUTION : A nickel hydrogen secondary battery 2 includes : an outer can 10; and an electrode group 22 accommodated in the outer can 10 together with an alkaline electrolyte in a sealed state. The electrode group 22 comprises a positive electrode 24 and a negative electrode 26 which are overlapped with a separator 28 interposed therebetween. The negative electrode 26 includes a rare earth-Mg-Ni based hydrogen absorbing alloy having a crystal structure where an AB2 type subunit and an AB5 type subunit are laminated.
