PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a Yb-doped optical fiber having low transmission loss, high photo darkening resistance or low PD loss increase, and high nonlinearity resistance. SOLUTION : In a rare earth doped optical fiber including a core doped with a rare earth element and Cl and a cladding provided on an outer periphery of the core, the concentration of the rare earth element doped in the core is 0.05 mol% or more and 1 mol% or less, and the concentration of Cl doped in the core is 0.005 mol% or more and 0.1 mol% or less.
