The invention relates to a process for reducing rare earth oxides to rare earth metals (34), which comprises the following steps : iodination of a rare earth oxide to form a rare earth diiodide, heating of the rare earth diiodide above a melting point to form a rare earth diiodide melt (21), electrolysis of the rare earth diiodide melt (21) with deposition of the rare earth metal (34) at an electrode (23).
