PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method of isolating and recovering a rare earth element from an alloy containing the rare earth element and iron by a simple method and selectively, and to especially provide a method of recovering a rare earth element containing very little iron. SOLUTION : Provided is a method of selectively recovering a rare earth element from an alloy containing a rare earth element and iron, wherein the alloy containing the rare earth element and iron is dissolved in a mineral acid, followed by addition of oxalic acid and, further, adjustment of pH of the solution to 0.5 or less by an alkali aqueous solution to precipitate and recover the rare earth element in the solution as a rare earth oxalate.
