The invention relates to a method for producing a magnetic alloy from an intermetallic compound having a rare earth metal, a transition metal, and boron, preferably neodymium-iron-boron. For this purpose, a workpiece prepared from said intermetallic compound is subjected to an intensive plastic deformation in form of a high-pressure torsion deformation. In particular, for this purpose, the prepared workpiece is clamped between two pressure plates under high pressure, and is deformed in torsion by rotating at least one of the pressure plates. By means of this method, a magnetic alloy is produced having magnetic grains, which are separated from one another by non-ferromagnetic layers. The grain size of the magnetic grains is no bigger than 500 nm, and more than eight non-ferromagnetic layers are thinner than 200 nm.
