A process for determining conditions for operation of a reversible mixed metal oxide catalyst in an oxidation reaction, wherein the catalyst oxygen content can be at least partially restored in a regeneration step, comprises : analysing the catalyst for reversible oxygen content; regenerating the catalyst under a first set of conditions in a regenerator; reducing the metal oxide of the catalyst; and repeating the previous steps until a regeneration temperature range for oxygen reversibility is determined. The regenerator may comprise a fluid bed. The catalyst may have the empirical formula : MoVaNbbTeeZdOn, wherein Z is at least one element selected from the group consisting of W, Cr, Ta, Ti, Zr, Hf, Mn, Fe, Re, Ru, Co, Rh, Ni, Pd, Pt, Ag, Au, Zn, B, Al, Ga, In, Ge, Sn, Pb, P, Bi, Y, rare earth elements and alkaline Earth elements, a = 0.01 to less than 1.0, b = 0.01 to less than 1.0, c equals 0.01 to less than 1.0, d equals 0.0 to less than 1.0 and n is determined by the oxidation states of the other elements.
