An ingot-derived magnesium-based alloy having a combination of mechanical and corrosion properties, the alloy consisting of (in wt.%) : 1-10% scandium; up to about 3% yttrium; 1-3% rare-earth elements; 0.1-0.5% zirconium; not more than 0.001% of each of iron, nickel and copper; not more than 0.0001% of each of aluminium, cadmium, strontium, thorium and zinc, which are toxiferous, radioactive and harmful to a living organism; less than 0.005% of other metal impurities; balanced magnesium.
