The invention relates to a leaching method for extracting rare earths from rare earth minerals containing phosphate. The method involves piling up the rare earth minerals containing phosphate and passing an extraction agent, for example an aqueous strong acid such as aqueous sulphuric acid, through them. The extraction agent thereby enriched with rare earths is then treated. The rare earths are removed during this treatment. Furthermore the aqueous sulphuric acid is produced and mixed with the extraction agent in a bioreactor. The method can be carried out at ambient temperature and pressure. It is therefore a method for extracting rare earths with low energy and low chemical consumption.
