PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To substantially suppress illuminance fluctuation of a short arc type discharge lamp. SOLUTION : The short arc type discharge lamp, with a cathode 20 and an anode 30 arranged in opposition inside an arc tube 12 with mercury and rare gas such as Ar sealed inside, is endowed with spectral distribution characteristics satisfying a formula : H334/H546≥0.35(M≥15). In the formula, a mercury volume is to be M where an intensity of an emission-line spectrum of 334 nm is represented as H334, and an intensity of that of 546 nm, as H546.
