PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a cutting tool superior in wear resistance and chipping resistance. SOLUTION : The cutting tool 1 is constituted of a silicon nitride sintered body containing silicon nitride as a main component and an RE element compound (the RE is at least one element of a rare earth element). In the cutting tool 1, an intersecting ridge portion of a rake face 2 and flank face 3 serves as a cutting edge 4, and the cutting edges 4 positioned between the adjacent two flank faces 3 form a nose 5. When residual stress is measured by the 2D method at the nose 5 of the rake face 2, the residual stress σ11in the direction parallel to the rake face 2 and heading toward the closest nose 5 to a measuring point from a center of the rake face 2 is set to 10-30 MPa (σ11=-10 to -30 MPa) in compressive stress, and the residual stress σ22in the direction parallel to the rake face 2 and perpendicular to the σ11direction is not more than 10 MPa (σ22=-10 to 0 MPa) in the compressive stress.
