PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for the ring opening of a cyclic ether with high ring opening selectivity at a specific site thereof. SOLUTION : In a ring opening reaction of a cyclic ether where a hydroxyalkyl group is bound to a carbon atom in its ether linkage, a Rh-bearing catalyst and metal element(s) selected from Re, Mo and W are made to coexist with the cyclic ether. In this ring opening reaction, the bond between an oxygen atom and the carbon atom to which the hydroxyalkyl group in the ether linkage is bound can be cleaved in high selectivity.
