PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for manufacturing a metal of a rare earth element and an alloy thereof by a molten salt electrolysis method, capable of efficiently carrying out an electrolytic treatment at lower temperature and at lower applied voltage than those of general electrolytic treatment conditions.
SOLUTION : A metal of a rare earth element and/or an alloy thereof is reductively extracted by adding an oxide and a boron oxide of the rare earth element to a molten salt consisting of fluoride, lithium fluoride, and barium fluoride of the rare earth element, and by applying a voltage of 2.5 to 4.5 V while heating at 750 to 950°C.
