A potato cleaning assembly has a worm drive cleaner with a flexible mantle. A supply of freshly dug potatoes includes a quantity of earth which is removed by a cylinder (1) with a helical profile. The helical profile projects from a rotating cylinder made especially of a flexible material which moves radially in and out in response to loads on the helical profile. The flexible cylinder forms the outer mantle on a two-part interlocking rotating drive shaft. The drive shaft consists of two parallel lengths of sheet metal (8, 9) with a divergent V-shaped center section. The mantle flexing action liberates potatoes by progressive pressure on clods of earth containing potatoes.
