The protection device has a cutting unit (1) with a cutting table (2) having a cutter bar (3) and an adjoining cutting mechanism tray (8), where the protective device is associated with a measuring device (25). The measuring device is provided for monitoring the applied force in a direction of a mowing direction of the cutting unit. The measuring device is connected to a control device (27). The control unit is connected to an acoustic or optical display (31) in a drivers cabin of a combine harvester.
